I’m trying to remember the title of a teen novel that I read sometime around 1985. It’s a coming of age set in the 80s about two girls who are best friends.  I think one is brunette, the other a redhead (or at the least that’s how the book cover depicted them)  As young kids, the brunette is prettier (the book is told from her POV).  She’s from a modest family and the other is wealthy.  They have a deep friendship that is tested and ultimately breaks down when they are in high school.  The rich girl becomes very pretty, gets noticed by boys and finds a different crowd of more popular friends. It’s more painful for the other girl who’s left behind. I think there’s a part where they make up (a heart-to-heart of sorts) but they will never be best friends or close again.

I remember a scene at the end of the book where the brunette is looking in the mirror, getting ready for a date, she notices a bit of acne that she covers up with makeup.  She’s reflecting on the friendship and has come to terms with everything but it’s not a particularily cheerful ending.

The title may or may not have had had “Best Friends” in it, and I think remember it featuring photographs of the two girls in 80s fashion and possibly photos featuring them in different, maybe silly? poses.
