Request #490 From Neely

This book I found in my grandmothers house. It was a shortish chapter book about a little girl who was a witch. She lives with her aunts in I think the attic? I can’t remember if the plot is she doesn’t want to be a witch or her just being a witch. She gave off junie b Jones in witch form

  1. Anna Elizabeth Bennett was the author of a book called “Little Witch” and it was about a little girl who went by the nickname of Minx. She lived in the attic of a house owned by the witch. The witch was all about trying to teach her to make potions and fly on a broomstick and all Minx wanted to do was go to school and have friends over for slumber parties (which she obviously could not.) When she would look in the attic mirror, she would sometimes see a beautiful woman reflected in the mirror as if she were standing behind her, but whenever she turned around, the woman was not there.

At some point, Minx tells the beautiful woman she loves her and the woman is made whole — turns out the woman was her mother, who had angered the witch years ago when she was a baby, and whose curse it was to only be able to see how sad her child was but would be unable to help her unless the child told the woman/mother she loved her, which the witch predicted she’d never say since she was brought up by the witch. Anyway, the witch was vanquished, happy ending all around. It was one of the first chapter books a lot of little girls read, by the way.
