#260 Request From Wendy

I have been searching for years for a book of short stories for girls. I believe it was published in the sixties. I vaguely remember the title being “Stories for Young Girls”. One of the stories was about a girl who didn’t have friends. Her grandmother (as I recall) bought her a St. Bernard puppy to force her to take it out for walks and get out of her house to hopefully meet people. The puppy was very rambunctious and attracted a lot of attention. When people approached the dog, they typically asked “Will he bite?” So the girl named the dog “Willie Bite.” She meets a boy and ends up having a social life. I also remember from that same story that she ate a Sunday dinner of pork and baked beans! I would so love to find this collection of stories for my own granddaughters!

  1. The Willie Bite story is called “The Sensational Type” and I have it in a compilation called More Dog Stories with 2 collies on the front. I would not be surprised if it was in multiple anthologies though.

  3. It looks like this story is in the book “A Batch of the Best-Stories for Girls” edited by N. Gretchen Greiner. As Sheesh stated above there is a story called “The Sensational Type” included in it by Shirley Shapiro Pugh.
