Maybe you can help? Both my girlfriend and I can remember a book from when we were children where the cover shows a drawing of a girl flying on the back of a bird and she is looking back at the villagers who are far below. One of them is shaking a fist. Another has a pitchfork or broom! We think…

I remember the book being set in Northern Ireland. The main character learns he’s apart of a world of magic of some sort. The magic is involved through speaking certain phrases. When the sorcerer use the magic, their bodies turns into iron. In the first book he turns 13 when he learns about this. He and some other people fight a guy who,s motif is being a clockmaker I think. I remember the main character saving the princess of the demons or something and by the second book they start becoming friends but the princess is manipulating him or something. She gives him the power to speak every magic invocation with the benefit of being so accurate in pronunciation in the words he barely turns into iron. I remember reading this as a younger kid but I moved away from the library so I can’t check what it was. Thanks so much.

This may be more impossible than usual, as it was a short story in a book of horror / suspense for teens, circa late 70’s / early 80’s. The specific story was about a girl who, upset over family conflict (I think) runs into the woods, where she meets a mysterious boy. Turns out he is from some underwater place, maybe a ghost… when she goes back to find him again the lake is gone, and when she calls for him, a spooky old woman asks “Who dares to call for the lights of Coralaine?” She chooses to leave to world to join her love in the haunted underwater town. Extra hard to find because no relation at all to Neil Gaiman’s Coraline but name of town similar.

I can remember a book that I read in grade school very vaguely and it has been plaguing me for years. All I really can remember is that it was a kind of utopian/futuristic book with robots. There was a younger robot and an older robot that was kind of like a butler, who ‘died’ toward the end. I remember that it seemed like a pretty thick book for a 5th or 6th grader. I feel like the title was pretty simple, like one word or something. And it had a pretty simple and muted cover, maybe lots of light gray? I know this isn’t much to go off of, but I’ve tried searching everywhere!

The plot is a girl finds out her dad/uncle is a pirate, her teacher is also a pirate, the dad/uncle is then kidnapped from their house and the teacher and girl go on a rescue mission to find the dad/uncle and the treasure. I feel it was possibly called treasure map? Not sure!

I have been looking for a children’s short story for about ten years that I think was in a collection of stories, all about teddy bears/bears. I can barely remember it, but what I do remember is this: the story revolved around a village where there was a dark castle on a hill. This woman lived there who barely visited the village and no one ever saw her, they were all frightened of her because they thought she was a witch. Then one day I think some village kids wanted to see what she was like and so they made this young village girl go up to the castle and stay there. Or maybe this old witch kidnapped the girl I can’t be sure but for some reason she ended up at this castle and I think she was sleeping there. She brought her teddy with her which is really important in the story. she saw this old woman crying I think or something but when the old woman saw this little girl’s teddy she was happy because I think it turns out that her son died or something and all she wanted was a friend, she was so lonely after he died which is why she locked herself up in the castle. So this little girl gives her the teddy bear as a comfort and suddenly the old woman is really happy again and her castle turns colourful and she becomes friends with the village people and all because she was given a teddy bear.

It was a children’s book about a little girl that believed in fairies and for some reason got turned into one and lived in a garden amongst the flower petals, and there was a scene describing her drinking nectar. It’s all I remember and I’ve always wanted to find the book again.

The book followed these kids who lived in a lighthouse. The book setting is Europe during WW2. The characters meet Winston Churchill, although I do not remember how or why. I know that either he reveals ou they discover his plan to win the war. Also some chapters follow German sailors! The book cover was supposed to be similar to old-timey maps.

read it in the 2nd grade. Or rather, our 2nd grade teacher read it aloud to all of us. This was maybe 1995, 1996, 1997. So would have had to be out in that timeframe, maybe hot amongst the school librarian crowd. There’s a girl in it named Angel (I think?!) & maybe she lives in a swamp? She wears glasses but THERE IS NO GLASS IN THEM THEY ARE FAKE but the narrator is mega impressed that she wears them just for personality. CAN YOU HELP ME FIND THE BOOK?!
