I’m looking for a book that I read when I was home from school and really sick – either in ‘79 or maybe as late as ‘82. I’m not sure if it was YA or not but feel like the cover was blue with a painted illustration. The only thing I really remember is that the protagonist was a young girl, a thief – maybe jewelry??? She is running away from something bad. She also gets a partner who is a huge guy but maybe named Tiny. The partner gets shot and dies (totally shocking to me at the time). When he dies he is holding a suitcase and everything spills out. There is something about pearls in the death scene. There was also a big, old car that was significant. I remember thinking the book wasn’t appropriate for someone my age.
Trying to recall this novel has plagued me for years. Hope you can help.

I’m looking for a book that I read in the late 80s or early 90s (could be a scholastic book) It was about two young girls who met in an apartment building and both had crazy dreams every certain number of days that they were compelled to tell each other about and they work together to interpret what they meant. One of the first dreams was about a Four eyed monster and the other was about a bunch of teens swimming in the the sea. It was interpreted to mean the apartment numbers of the girls…4i (four eye) and 18C (a teen sea). They interpreted the dreams to try to figure something out about maybe their parents? I don’t really remember anything else but it’s been driving me crazy for years!!!

I picked up this book at a thrift store but lost it. I believe it was published in the 80s? I might be wrong but my mind says 84. But heck maybe it was the 60s, idk. I think the cover was mostly yellow. It’s about three girls going to an all-girl’s college. The three are put as roommates and try to make friends. It’s told in first person I think, through the eyes of the girl who’s kind of rich and a goody two shoes, but the main character is actually one of the roommates. I think Millie is her name? Again I might be wrong on that. The goody two shoes is kind of frustrated by one of the roommates who is very athletic and kind of rebellious. The roommate is a main character is poor, from a farm, already engaged to someone, and needs glasses but is too poor for them. I vaguely remember I think she had to go home for some reason near the end of the book? But the whole twist is that she is riding a bike on campus while the two other roommates stay in their dorm (or maybe in the library) and because she needs glasses, she isn’t able to properly see a car and gets hit on the bike and dies. I remember when the news is broken, the tough athletic rebellious girl throws up and the protagonist goes to get her some towels. I remember the farm girl as being more quiet and reserved. I think about the book from time to time and really need to know who it’s by. It’s a female author.
Suggestion from an anonymous Lost Classics reader: Tell Me if the Lovers are Losers by Cynthia Voigt.

this is a ya book (like childrens, maybe 8-12 yo)? The cover is brown (like a bit more orange than a cigar brown) with a pic of a girl who has like short kind of curly (I always thought it looked like a curly mullet lol) and like maybe a closet in the background? I believe the main protagonists name is Francis (a young woman) who is sent to family (her aunts?)? There’s an undertone that maybe she’s a bit difficult, at least to the people in the house. She goes up a staircase behind this door in the Pantry and is transported to some garden or outside world (that’s not really outside etc). I want to say there’s some ghost story background but not sure.

The story is about a blind girl who could feel stories or could tell stories from small rewards you could give her. Then there was a king who was cursed by his old lover to never sleep again, he then became a tyrant king. So when this king heard about the girl that could tell stories he decided to have her as his wife. Her task was to help him fall asleep and if she could not do it by a certain time, he would kill her…. or something like that.
I’ve been trying to find this book everywhere, I just can’t find it. I remember the cover had red theater drapes and a girl who had a nose ring and alot of jewelery around her neck. It looked very rusty so i thought it was a old book.

I read a book in second grade, which would have been the late 1980s. I can’t remember the name of the author or title. It’s about a girl named Megan who moves from Oakdale, South Dakota to a new state (I want to say Ohio but I won’t swear to that). She meets a girl named Heather and they become friends. She also meets a girl named Cheryl, the classic popular mean girl, and the bulk of the book is Megan trying to work through these friendships. I vividly remember a scene at the end where Megan sticks a wad of gum in Cheryl’s hair, and I remember the passage: But it wasn’t Heather’s hair she stuck the gum in, it was Cheryl’s! Cheryl let out a blood curdling scream.”
With these details I have not been able to find anything on any website I’ve searched and I’m at a loss! I’d love to let my daughter read it because I remember I loved it so much.

I am searching for a book probably written very early 60s. Its about a girl that goes through a gate or door in a hedge and finds fairies. She goes to play with them every day. I think her name was Nan and I think the book had castle or manor in the title but I could be wrong about this. Ive searched and searched with no luck. Its not The Secret Garden.

I am looking for a short story that believe appeared in READ magazine between 1977-1985.
The story involved a high school boy who was overweight and wanted to play the flute in the high school band to impress a girl. He began to eat salads and jog to slim down. In the end she still rejected him but he did not turn back to eating a dozen jelly donuts. Sound familiar?
Solved by Lost Classics reader Sheesh, who writes: the story is called Fat Boy (real imaginative right?). I read it in a book of short stories called You Can’t Tell Me What To Do.

I am looking for a book I read somewhere between 1987-89
A young couple goes to a chapel to get married. The old couple who runs it ends up kidnapping them. I think they kill the grooms and hold all the brides hostage in the attic giving them possibly fruit names. I just remember the name Peaches.
Ok it does sound cheesy but it was a really good book and I think about it a lot wishing I could find it. I’ve been trying for a few years with no luck. I do remember it had a white cover with maybe a girl coming out of a flower.
I’ve tried lots of forums including Facebook and Reddit with no luck. I’m about to give up but thought I would give this a shot.
