I’m trying to locate the title and author of a 1950’s children’s book (perhaps preteen or ya) where the heroine is a young girl named Carol and she dies, perhaps around Christmas time.

The Birds’ Christmas Carol by Kate Wiggin?

Seconding The Birds’ Christmas Carol! The main character is definitely Carol, which her mother picked out because she was born on Christmas Day. She’s pretty sick and bedridden at the time the story begins. I can’t remember if her illness is specified in the book or not, but I thought it was tuberculosis. Most of the plot is about Carol planning a Christmas party for a low/income family in her neighborhood. She does die at the end but her family and the low-income family stay in touch. It’s definitely pre-1950s (published in 1888) but somewhat of a classic. I got a free edition through Apple Books so see if you can get it through that.
